Magic of the New Noct-Nikkor

Nikon recently announced the new Noct-Nikkor 58mm/0.95 lens for the Z-mount.  Since I  have a pathological weakness for ultra-fast lenses and since I've had a chance to use the previous 58mm/1.2 Noct Nikkor for the F-mount, I had to get my hands on one.  These are in short supply as the lens elements are hand-ground and polished.  Having friends in low places (Thanks, Mark! :-)) I managed to get my hands on one.

I'm blown away by what this beast can do.  Here are some portraits of my usual scapegoats, er, family.  No post processing other than adding of the frame and the sig logo. Shot with the Z7 and the Noct, wide open at f/0.95.

Fun!  The depth of field is so shallow that your subjects must remain perfectly still to remain in focus - like the old time photographs 😀

Time to fire up the welding gear and some rebar to make the harnesses for the neck? 😀

I've been teaching myself color manipulation in PS CC, specifically, techniques for Color Grading.  Thought I'd take these portraits and practice.  All these images below are the originals file with the same color grading applied.

HI Raaj, I'm not an expert in color grading so take my comments with a grain of NaCl.  Did you adjust in one direction only?  I am seeing a warmer colors shift but not seeing any cooler colors compared to the original.  I used the woman in the blue shirt for the comparisons.  Each image when viewed alone looks pleasing.  When viewed side by side, the original image looks too cool (yellow skin tones) and the CG image maybe slightly too warm (a bit too magenta-red, especially in the eyebrows and under the eyes).  I really like the way the clothing responded to the CG, although blues to me seem more saturated rather than color shifted.  Overall I do find the CG image more pleasing although perhaps try dialing it back just a bit to see what happens.

Hi John,

For this Color Grading exercise, I mainly played with replacing the Color LUTs and then applying Gradients.  You are right - the shifts are between the end-points of the Color Gradients which are defined by the specific LUT.  I am still experimenting with how this all works - I think I understand the general lego blocks of Color Grading but still learning to put them together.  

There are certain "looks" that are popular like the ubiquitous "Orange & Teal" look [Blues Teals applied to Shadows and Orange applied at the highlight end] and some of the more popular "cinematic" looks.  Apparently the movie types discovered that most skin tones (with some exceptions - people like me) are somewhere towards the orange end of the spectrum and therefore pushing the shadows towards blue/teal emphasizes the complimentary orange tones.  Fascinating application of color theory.

Yes. Most skin is a+ (magenta) b+ (yellow) on the Lab scale.  Very young children or very light skinned Caucasians may have a=b but for most it is b>a.  Very very dark skin has a lot of magenta and hence much higher a.

There was a book called "skin" by Lee Varis some 14 years ago.  With regards to digital tools, the book is of course not up to date, but the concepts are timeless.  Maybe there's a newer version now.  Here is a sample http://varis.com/2014/04/22/color-correction-4-skin/ ;  I think he has some videos online too.

Lee Varis is the man!  I do have that book and it is the reference for portrait and fashion (color) retouching.  His process of color calibration, if I recall correctly, was very thorough.  I think there is an updated/revised version of the book - https://www.amazon.com/Skin-Complete-Digitally-Photographing-Retouching/dp/0470592125/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=lee+varis&qid=1575557120&sr=8-1  and also DVD/videos of his stuff.
