And now its my turn.  Following on the heels of Char and John I travelled to Hokkaido in February 2019.   I am starting to work on my images and would appreciate your advice and critical feedback.    Which of these two do you prefer and why.

Hi Ulana,

I like the bottom one because I like a bit of color in my winter landscape.  For my taste, the image is little bit on the cool side, but hey it's not my image 🙂

Don't forget to clone out those little posts!

Looking forward to the entire series!

Hi Ulana,

I too prefer the color version, though the blue in the image appears a bit patchy and there also appears to be a very, very faint set of patches that appear to be towards the pink/red end of the spectrum.  At least they appear that way in relation to the blue areas in the image.  May just be a trick of perception,

I too have a similar image of the same tree and I've not been able to do anything with it so far.  Seeing your image has made me want to revisit and see if I can do something with it.

Look forward to seeing more of your latest Hokkaido images.

Cheers!

Thanks guys. You may have pinpointed issues with the colour version that were bothering me.  Will see if I can tweak it and perhaps tone down the blue.    My plan was to pair it up with a similar image from 2017 (which is in BW).  Even though we were told there was less snow in 2019, at this location that doesn't seem to be the case.

That's because those guys went during the wrong week, whereas we were there the "right" weeks 🙂

I concur with the guys regarding preferring the color image. Having been there, I prefer to see whatever small amounts of color the scene provided when I was photographing, versus the "normalizing" of a B/W conversion.

Thanks Char.  Unlike 2017 I am not seeing much black and white conversion this year apart from some of the seascapes.

I have posted a gallery of images. Martin's tree fit better as a black and white.  In time I will integrate the 2017 images for a larger portfolio.   The link is below.

That'a a fantastic set Ulana!  You really did have some great snow, especially at Ebisu & the Coke machine.

Well done!

Thanks John.  I think going in February gave us a bit more snow but that also meant some of our locations  were not accessible anymore as the roads were closed.  Glad you like the coke machine :).
